Gingerbread House Party

Okay so they are not Gingerbread but graham crackers are just as fun to decorate...
We cut graham crackers into house shapes and used sugar cooked on the stove to attach all the sides together.
*** cook sugar until golden brown and then use to attach pieces together. Reheat the sugar often to keep the sugar runny.

The picture below pretty much sums up the fun my family had. There really is no need to say more.

But I will say a little more ;)

Making gingerbread houses has been a tradition in my home since my parents made their first gingerbread house the day they got engaged. There was only one year my family didn't make gingerbread houses and that was because my brother, who suffered from Muscular Dystrophy, was in the hospital the whole month of December and life was just crazy at my home. Luckily that year some kind stranger, not knowing our family tradition, left a gingerbread house on our door step to wish us a Merry Christmas and so the tradition lived on. As my family grows, into what is now 42 total, it gets a little harder to get us all together on one table so we usually have to do the gingerbread house decorating in shifts. I was so excited for the first year for Jaxon to participate even if most the candy went in his mouth or on me instead of on the house.

The finished product

Now we must wash all the candy down with some milk...

... and go for some more sweets :)

  3. Hi Bridget, I'm Robyn (I was at the cookie exchange last week) I've been slowly going through the list of blogs Jen put up on her post about the event. Your blog is absolutely wonderful! This gingerbread house party (and everything else I've seen) is simply delightful. Really, I'm impressed. Just wanted to say hi and that I think what you are doing here is amazing. If you get a chance hop on over to my gingerbread house post... you might get a kick out of it since its such a tradition for your family too :) http://penpalsandpicturebooks.blogspot.com/2011/12/custom-homemade-gingerbread-baby-house.html

    1. it is just sugar that was cooked on the stove at a high heat until it gets golden brown then keep it on a lower temp to keep it runny and then dip each end of the graham cracker in the sugar and then attach it to whatever piece you want to build your house

    1. it is just sugar. Please read above comment. It will give you directions. Also it hardens faster and we have just always done this vs frosting because it does hold better.
